How can we apply Hindu Vedas knowledge in the modern world?

We all know that Vedas are a huge collection of sacred writings which comprises of chants, hymns, and mantras. But can the knowledge in Vedas be applied to today’s world?  
When I searched the internet to answer this question, I got to know that the Vedas are said to be the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. By going through Vedas one can know everything about God and even about all the concepts of this world. The Vedas talk about nature, the universe, God, and science. The knowledge in Vedas is divine. 
There are 4 Vedas:
1) Rig Veda
2) Sama Veda
3) Yajur Veda
4) Atharva Veda.

Vedas not only contain spiritual knowledge but they also contain concepts about universe, planets and advanced mathematics. The Rig Veda contains knowledge about Ayurveda, the practice of yoga and meditation. We all know that all these things are being practiced even today. Vedas also contain knowledge about the science of chemistry, astronomy, and surgery, etc. Vedic knowledge related to all these fields can be applied to the modern world.

Types of Vedas

There are 4 types of Vedas. The Rig Veda is the basis of all the other 3 Vedas. Let’s know about each type of Veda. The four types of Vedas are:

1. The Rig Veda

The Rig Veda contains various hymns and chants. It is believed to be the oldest Veda among all the four Vedas. It contains knowledge about health and yoga benefits. It also contains several mantras or chants related to blessing and curse. It basically is a Veda of mantras. It also teaches us about meditation and Ayurveda.

2. The Sama Veda

The Sama Veda teaches about the power of devotion. Most of the verses in the Sama Veda are taken from the Rig Veda. It contains a lot of spiritual knowledge. The verses in Sama Veda are not recited but sung. All the musical notes are believed to be derived from the Sama Veda.

3. The Yajur Veda

The word ‘Yajur’ means ‘sacrificial prayers’. The Yajur Veda mainly contains the sacrificial prayers that were used by the priests during the sacrificial rituals. Several verses in Yajur Veda are also borrowed from the Rig Veda. Many Upanishads are based on the knowledge derived from the Yajur Veda.

4. The Atharva Veda

The concepts that the Atharva Veda contains are completely different from all the other three Vedas. It contains knowledge about the treatment of various kinds of illness. It contains mantras for marriage, removal of demons, etc. It talks about penances, black magic, trade, and commerce, etc.

Vedic scholars have been extremely incredible in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Grammar and many more things from the very beginning. 1. Yoga

Yoga is not only spiritual but also aesthetic discipline in Hinduism. Patanjali was given the title of the father of modern yoga. Yoga is not only a science; it is an art as well. If one practices yoga well, he can control his mind and body completely. Yoga keeps us fit, healthy and active. It was originally introduced as a form of healing. It helps us to stay away from harmful emotions and creates a positive energy flow around us. Yoga helps in storing the emotional energy in one’s body. It means you can control various emotions like anger, eagerness, restlessness, etc. Yoga can make one’s life a lot better.

2. Ayurveda

The Ayurveda is believed to be the world’s oldest and holistic whole-body healing system. Charaka was known as the father of Ayurveda or the father of Indian medicine. It can heal any illness and provide good health to the individual. Ayurveda believes that the wellness and health of an individual depend upon a perfect balance between body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda says that one should eat minimally processed food to keep his body healthy. It is also believed that the ayurvedic medicines are free from any side effects but we need to follow the ayurvedic diet properly. The Ayurveda doesn’t only talk about medicine or diet but it also talks about meditation. The Ayurveda is so effective that it can even help to relieve the symptoms of deadly diseases like cancer.

3. Astrology

The astrology is the study of the correlation between synastry, our birth chart, and planets in motion with each other. Its science is believed to be beyond the physical. William Frederick Allan is known as the father of modern astrology. Astrology says that planetary motions affect every person’s destiny. Just like yoga, astrology also follows the theory of pattern energy. Some people also call it ‘Mother of all Sciences’. It is a very powerful tool to know about ourselves. One needs to know about his sun sign and all his birth-related details to use astrology to know about his destiny. Astrology can also be used to understand your relationship with other people like your partner, children, boss, friends, etc.

4. Astronomy

The astronomy is the science which answers every question related to planets, galaxies, stars, basically, it is the study of the universe. The literal meaning of astronomy is ‘the law of stars’. Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu is known as the father of modern Indian astronomy. People often confuse astronomy with astrology but both the sciences are a lot different from each other. The former is the science of study of the celestial bodies while the latter is the science of study of correlation of planetary motion with people’s horoscope and destiny. There are primarily two branches of astronomy, one is optical astronomy which involves the use of a telescope to study the visible phenomenon while the other branch that is the non-optical astronomy deals with the phenomenon that can’t be seen with naked eyes.

5. Psychology

It is the science of the study of the human mind. Wilhelm Wundt is known as the father of psychology. Using psychology you can know about one’s thoughts, personality, emotion, behavior, and many more things. It is also used to treat people with mental health issues and behavioral problems. There are 5 main concepts or perspectives in psychology. Those perspectives are: – humanistic, biological, psychodynamic, behavioral and cognitive. Psychology can help an individual to overcome developmental challenges.  

There are many more branches of Vedic sciences including metallurgy, chemistry, philosophy, administration, ecology, botany, etc.

When and by whom were the Vedas written?

The Vedas are believed to be written between 1500-1000 BCE.
Earlier, the Vedas were taught orally and it wasn’t written anywhere. Sages used to pass down the information written in Vedas to their students. Sage Vyasa was believed to have written down the Vedas for the first time. There was only one Veda but Sage Vyasa split the Veda into four Vedas for the convenience of the readers.
The Rig Veda was written first among all the four Vedas.

Which Veda should be studied first?

Before studying Vedas, an individual should master the Vedic Sanskrit and grammar. As mentioned earlier, all the Vedas are based on the Rig Veda. It is the oldest among all the Vedas. It is advised to read the Rig Veda first. But one can’t study the Rig Veda without a guru. It contains different concepts of life in the form of mantras which are very difficult to understand without a guru. After the Rig Veda, one can study the Sama Veda then, the Yajur Veda and in the end, the Atharva Veda. The Vedic knowledge helps an individual to live a healthy and stress-free life.

Why Should We Study Vedas?

We should study Vedas at least once to understand various concepts of this world, to know about the mysteries of life and death, to attain a determined mind, to achieve internal tranquility and for physical and mental development. We should study Vedas to know the meaning of life and to realize our duty towards this life and this world. It contains every form of knowledge whether it is scientific, intellectual or spiritual. 

We should study Vedas to increase our knowledge in every aspect and we then can apply that knowledge to make not only ours but other’s life better too. Vedas make us realize the objective of our existence.
